Inspire Therapy

Inspire for Sleep Apnea at Dayton Respiratory Center

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you may feel exhausted and frustrated. You are not alone. Sleep apnea is a common condition, but it is also a serious one. Untreated, sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. We at Dayton Respiratory Center understand this frustration and can help to relieve your symptoms and get you on the road to better sleep with Inspire Therapy.

How does Inspire for Sleep Apnea work?

Inspire Therapy for Sleep Apnea is an implantable device that helps people with sleep apnea breathe more easily during sleep. It uses a small generator to deliver gentle stimulation to the nerve that controls the tongue. This helps keep the airway open so that people can sleep more peacefully and wake up feeling more rested.

The Inspire for Sleep Apnea device is placed under the skin in the chest during a short outpatient procedure. The entire system is implanted under the skin and requires no external equipment. The generator is about the size of a silver dollar, and the leads are about as thick as a spaghetti noodle.

Once the device is in place, people can adjust the stimulation level with a remote control. The device is designed to deliver just enough stimulation to keep the airway open without causing any discomfort.

Inspire Therapy is the only FDA-approved sleep apnea device that delivers stimulation to the tongue. It is an effective treatment for people with moderate to severe sleep apnea and can be an alternative for people who cannot tolerate CPAP.

Inspire Therapy vs CPAP

There are several types of sleep apnea treatments, including CPAP and Inspire Therapy. Both treatments can be effective, but they work in different ways.

CPAP

CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, is the most common sleep apnea treatment. It involves wearing a mask over the nose and mouth during sleep. The mask is connected to a machine that delivers air pressure to keep the airway open.

CPAP is effective for many people but can be uncomfortable or inconvenient. Some people find it difficult to sleep with the mask, and the machine can be loud.

Inspire Therapy

With Inspire Therapy our patients are getting a newer treatment for sleep apnea. It involves placing a small device under the skin of the chest. The device stimulates the nerve that controls the tongue and keeps the airway open during sleep.

Inspire therapy is less invasive than CPAP and can be more comfortable. The device is also quieter than a CPAP machine.

Both CPAP and Inspire therapy are effective treatments for sleep apnea. Our team can help you determine which option is best for you.
